MFA Boston, Community Arts Liaison

As a Community Arts Liaison at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, I established and maintained partnerships with the MFA's partnering after school programs. I created and implemented family-friendly educational activities using the MFA's encyclopedic collection and exhibitions as inspiration. These activities were enriched with guided tours of the museum. I also assisted the production and creation of the Artist Project, a collaboration between a guest artist and children from the partnering after school programs, resulting in a yearly exhibition at the MFA's Linde Family Wing.

Martin Luther King Day

I created this activity to celebrate Martin Luther King's Day. I presented selected quotes from Dr. King's speeches to the group. We read the quotes clockwise in a circle so everyone had a chance to read a bit, pausing when the children could not understand a particular word or its context. We decided through a show of hands which was the favorite quote. The group counted the number of letters on each quote and cut the necessary letters out of stock paper. The children decorated the letters and I assembled to quote on a piece of fabric, forming a word quilt.

Artist Project Julie Martini

Leading and assisting activities created by Julie Martini in collaboration with the children from the United South End Settlements after school program.

ICA Art Lab, Lead Artist and Assistant Teacher

Implemented a lesson plan inspired by Adriana Varejão's exhibition. Students worked on self portraits using photography and tracing. They were encouraged to swap portraits after doing a self portrait melding their features with another student's. Participants were encouraged to use unconventional color scheme  when coloring their work.

Participants were invited to make paintings/drawings using only words, inspired by the piece “The favorable outcome of every navigation” by Xaviera Simmons. This was inspired by Simmons's as well as my own use of words as raw matter for painting. This unusual approach to painting was the proposed activity to the ArtLab participants.
